A 34″ Waist Will Incur Fines in Japan

Thanks to Facebook friend Nelson for sharing this video on the waist-size limits in Japan.

In 2008 Japan enacted a law that employees and their family members over forty-years-old must have waist sizes no larger than 33 1/2″ for men and 35 1/2″ for women, or their companies would be fined. I found this New York Times article from 2008 on the launch of the program, but I haven’t yet found any newer information as to how well it has worked.

I’ll keep looking, but if you know anything about how successful (or unsuccessful) the program has been, let me know.
